Tesla stock moves on earnings today and expectations for self-driving, robotaxis and AI tomorrow. This mix can cause large swings. Tesla, Inc. trades under ticker TSLA on Nasdaq, a US stock exchange, in US dollars.
The most recent numbers are from the third quarter of 2026, released on 21 October: revenue of $28.046 billion and net income of $787 million.
Key takeaways
- Tesla reported $28.046 billion of revenue for the quarter ended 30 September 2026.
- The share price reflects expectations, so good news can still send it down.
- Robotaxi rides run in seven US cities, and costs per mile are not yet at target.
What a Tesla share actually is
A Tesla share is a small piece of ownership in Tesla, Inc. You own a slice of the business, not a loan to it. The shares trade on Nasdaq, a US stock exchange, and are quoted in US dollars.
Tesla says it has never declared a dividend on its common stock and does not expect to pay cash dividends in the foreseeable future. So the whole return comes from the share price moving.
Tesla reports two business areas. Automotive covers electric vehicles. Energy generation and storage is the other area. Tesla puts charging revenue in its "Services and other" category. Software such as Full Self-Driving is included with automotive sales rather than reported on its own.

Why the price swings so hard
When a share price rests mostly on profits expected years from now, a small change in those assumptions moves the price a lot. That is the mechanism behind most Tesla headlines.
Expectations also beat raw growth. On 2 July 2026, Tesla shares fell about 7% in midday trading despite record second-quarter deliveries of 480,126, well above the 402,776 analyst estimate. Reuters reported that optimism had already been priced in after the stock rose 12% earlier that week.
Corporate news adds another layer. On 20 October 2026, Elon Musk confirmed reported discussions about a possible Tesla–SpaceX combination and said both companies had formed special committees, while noting no terms had been agreed and a deal might never happen. Nothing was announced beyond that.
A one-day move is not proof that the business changed.
The numbers to watch each quarter
Here are four figures Tesla reported for the third quarter of 2026.
| Metric (Q3 2026) | Figure | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle deliveries | 486,532 | How many cars reached customers |
| Automotive gross margin | 18.5% | What's left after building the cars |
| Free cash flow | $1.531 billion | Cash left after capital spending |
| Energy storage deployed | 13.7 GWh | Size of the battery business |
Total automotive revenue was $20.560 billion for the quarter.
Margin needs a caveat. The reported figure was 18.5%. It was 18.1% excluding sales of regulatory credits. Regulatory credits are payments related to emissions rules. The figure includes a $260 million tariff refund recorded as a reduction to automotive sales costs.
Cash is the quiet one. Tesla defines free cash flow as operating cash flow less capital spending: $6.263 billion in, $4.732 billion out, $1.531 billion left. That does not mean Tesla can pay for all its growth from its own cash. Tesla cut its 2026 capital-spending forecast to about $20 billion in October 2026.
Energy is often ignored by people who think of Tesla as only a carmaker. Deployments rose 10%, but energy generation and storage revenue fell 16% year over year to $2.881 billion. Tesla described its highest-ever quarterly order rate and backlog, driven by data centers, grid constraints and power availability.
Robotaxi, FSD and the part of the price that is a bet
Selling rides or software earns money from the same car again and again. That is a different business from selling a car once, and it is the reason autonomy dominates the Tesla debate.
Here is where it actually stands. Tesla calls Full Self-Driving (Supervised) a set of features that help the driver. Tesla says it is not autonomous driving and that the driver must stay fully attentive. In the US it costs $99 per month by subscription and is not available for outright purchase.
Robotaxi service was operating in seven US cities as of 3 November 2026. As of 3 November 2026, the service was operating in Austin, Dallas, Houston and Fort Worth in Texas, plus Miami, Orlando and Tampa in Florida, with Fort Worth launching on 2 November according to local reporting. Tesla reported nearly two million cumulative unsupervised Robotaxi miles at the end of the third quarter.
The Cybercab is the two-seat vehicle with no steering wheel intended for that fleet. Rides began in Austin on 3 September 2026, production has started in Texas, and Tesla listed installed annual capacity above 125,000 units while cautioning that installed capacity is not the same as actual production rate.
What is still missing is the money part. And CFO Vaibhav Taneja said the company had not yet reached its target operating cost of $0.30 per paid Robotaxi mile.

What the market says Tesla is worth
Tesla closed at $403.82 per share on 2 November 2026. With 3,952,757,946 shares outstanding as of 15 October, that implied an equity market value of roughly $1.596 trillion.
Market value is simply the share price multiplied by the number of shares: what the market says the whole company is worth today. It is a starting point, not a verdict. A company valued partly as a carmaker and partly as an AI and transport business is hard to compare with other car manufacturers.
Risks
- Competition. Chinese brands reached 22.5% of Norway's new passenger-car registrations in October 2026, while Tesla held 0.73% share in Denmark, Reuters reported. In China, Reuters reported Tesla's share of the battery-EV market fell to 6.6% in Q2 2026 from a peak above 15% in 2020.
- Demand. Reuters reported US EV sales fell 30.7% through September 2026 after the $7,500 federal tax credit expired, with Tesla's sales down 14% over the first three quarters.
- Regulation. Nevada approved conditional paid service in Clark County for up to 5,000 vehicles in the first 12 months after permit issuance, and NHTSA is investigating the Cybercab's federal safety self-certification.
- Legal. On 16 October 2026, a US appeals court blocked California Tesla owners from bringing certain FSD claims together in one case, though the case remained pending. On 29 October, a South Korean court rejected owners' refund claims over FSD.
- Currency and expectations. Shares are priced in US dollars, so a European holder's return also moves with the exchange rate. And if the future already in the price arrives late, the price can fall while the business is fine.

Frequently asked questions
Why can Tesla stock fall on good delivery numbers?
Because the market prices in a number before it is published. In July 2026, record second-quarter deliveries of 480,126 beat the 402,776 analyst estimate, and the shares still fell about 7% in midday trading, after a 12% rise earlier that week. Beating last year is not the same as beating what investors already assumed.
Does Tesla pay a dividend?
No. Tesla says it has never declared a dividend on its common stock and does not anticipate paying cash dividends in the foreseeable future. For a shareholder, that means every euro of return depends on the share price, and on the dollar.
Is Full Self-Driving the same as a self-driving car?
Not in Tesla's own words. Tesla calls Full Self-Driving (Supervised) a set of features that help the driver. Tesla says it is not autonomous driving and that the driver must stay fully attentive and ready to supervise. Robotaxi is the separate driverless service, running in seven US cities as of 3 November 2026.
How can someone in Europe buy Tesla shares?
European investors can buy Tesla shares through a broker that offers them; Tesla trades on Nasdaq under TSLA, in US dollars. Two things change your actual result beyond the share price: the exchange rate between your currency and the dollar, and the fees and tax rules where you live, which differ by country.
Why does energy storage matter if Tesla is a carmaker?
It is part of Tesla's energy generation and storage segment, one of Tesla's two reported segments. In Q3 2026 Tesla deployed 13.7 GWh and said it had its highest-ever quarterly order rate and backlog, driven by data centers and grid constraints, even though segment revenue fell 16% year over year to $2.881 billion.
